Brignoles

Description of the Work of Art

"Brignoles" is an exercise based on the observation of three people in nature and designed to recognize oneself in the Other. By contemplating their actions, I try to see myself reflected in them: in their feelings, stillness and movements. My purpose was to connect with the Now in order to feel that we are part of a whole; nature and humans, in a constant dance of life.

Action guidelines:
Action of 11 minutes in total.
Location: Fragment of a natural landscape in Brignoles, France.
First part: 9 minutes of being in silence without any other type of instruction. The only thing that I tell them is that they start at a certain place and from there they can do whatever they want. Next, I remain silent and stand next to the camera trying not to make any movement or sound. I watch them and I watch myself.
Second part: I give them a piece of paper and a pencil for them to do whatever they want with them. I make this second part only 2-minute long so that only the first thing that comes to their mind comes out. The idea is that the writing, painting, stroke or smudge be automatic and free of judgement.

I wrote the following texts while the protagonists completed their 11-minute action.

Protagonists:

Jérôme Birolini
What are you looking at? and sighing? All the leaves move with and over you, the yellow butterflies have come out to beat their wings. How many are with you? The winds whisper thoughts to you. Quiet, completely, are you still breathing? You look like a photo, a sculpture made of marble and textile. The whole landscape caresses you in silence. Sometimes we look at you without touching you, you are a piece of me. Your hands stick out in the distance. I remember the day when I first saw you.

Jean Birolini
You are part of life, without rest or pause. Chop, hammer and pound. Breaking and breaking. Hands, feet and body in motion. All sticks of the same size, you modify the landscape, dominate it, inhabit it and know that you are part of it and of its constant transformation. Change with nature and become part of it. Adapt. Be the red spot on a green background, complementary dance of light colors. Who are you talking to?

Catherine Henensal
The house trailer trembles. You are in the dark, but a light covers your face. You looked for it and it looked for you. You cover yourself. You were uncomfortable, you put on and took off your scarf, but deep down you were blending with nature. You look like a flower that comes out of the tree, not from the ground. The wind stops and so do you. How deafening are the thoughts that don't let us see clearly! You tone down, just like the day gets dark. The birds say goodbye. Hand bath on the face. The trunk supports your humanity and your page in silence.
